Abel Tasman
Abel Tasman National Park is one of those places that comes highly recommended by everyone who has been there, and for good reason: the water is bright blue, the beaches are golden, and the weather is beautiful. If you like to kayak, it doesn’t take long to find a tiny secluded beach inaccessible by land that you can have all to yourself. Definitely a trip highlight.
We spent 3 days in Abel Tasman. The first day we got a late start and had to paddle up the “Mad Mile” in the late afternoon. The Mad Mile is a stretch of ocean that is know for being windy and rough…it did not disappoint. It was fun but occasionally scary paddling in open ocean with 6 foot waves sweeping across our kayak! Once around the bend we found calmer waters though.

Thankfully we found a beach to chill out on after that!

The first night was spent camping in Anchorage Bay. Our walk on the beach…

…and the next morning, watching other kayaks come in.

On the second day, we got up close and personal with some young seals as we paddled. They’re just like little puppies playing in the surf.

By 3 o’clock on the second day we had converted our baggage from the hold of our sea kayak to our backpacks. There are water taxis, which are boats that scoot up and down the coast all day, and we had arranged for one of them to pick up our kayaks while we hiked on.

We tramped for 3 hours to our campsite near Awaroa Bay. The next morning, we were picked up a water taxi and delivered back to our car, exhausted and sunburned…and happy.
This is our last day on the South Island and while we’re sorry to see it go, we have high hopes for the North Island too.

Very peaceful to wake up totally alone.
